Off island, follow A249 bear left at sign.
Sittingbourne, has a long history as a market town - an important stage post for
medieval pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. Several coaching inns remain
in the modern high street which has been recently pedestrianised, allowing
safe access to a host of shops, eating establishments and local
cinema.
Steam Railway From the M2 (junction 5), or M20
(junction 7), follow the A249 and then the A2 to Sittingbourne Town Centre
and Main Line Station. The SKLR’s SITTINGBOURNE VIADUCT station is just
a few minutes away, beside the new retail estate.
The Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway(SKLR), is the preserved
southern half of the former Bowater’s Industrial Railway.
The line used to transport paper and goods between the mills at
Sittingbourne and Kemsley, and the docks at Ridham, but was taken over by
preservationists in 1969. Today, the SKLR is Swales most popular tourist
attraction.
Museum and Walk
The Museum Walk-A leisurely walk around items of original rolling stock
dating from the Bowater’s days, explaining how they were used.
Our new Museum explains the full history the railway, from building the
line at the turn of the century, to preservation in 1969, to the present
day. With many photographs and diagrams, and someone on hand should you
wish to delve a little deeper!
Teynham
Off island, to Sittingbourne, turn left onto A2, follow signs.
an area described as "The birth place of the cherry orchards of
Kent". In the 16th century Henry VIII's, Richard Harris planted
cherries, pippens and golden russett apple trees from the continent.
Dolphin Yard Sailing Museum Crown Quay Lane,
Sittingbourne.
A Unique museum set
in an original barge yard; barges and other traditional craft are
undergoing preservation at the site, which is dedicated to the history of
sailing barges.

building once used as a courthouse, school and town gaol. Displays,
documents and photographs.
The Swallows Sittingbourne, Car
